Characteristics of Software Process consists of:
• Understandability, making the process explicitly defined and how it so easy to understand the definition of the process
• Visibility, Activity process produces a clear result so that the stage of the process is seen
• Supportability, process activity can be supported on the Case tools
• Acceptability, acceptance of a defined process and is used by the Engineer during Software product development.

Category of software in general can be grouped as follows:
• System Software, A set of programs that written for programs serving others.
Such as compilers, editors and the file manager utility.

• Business Software, business information processing such payroll, inventory, etc..
• Software Engineering and Sciences, indicated with the use of number crunching algorithms.

1. Software Specification – what should be done by and software limitations / constraints development
2. Software Development – the process of producing a system software
